Romagna-based Dementia Senex re-emerge on the scene with this their second ep, which follows Sun Goes Down Behind, now four years old. Heartworm, in its seventeen minutes, shows a band devoted to a post metal hardcore with rather aggressive traits but sufficiently varied and full of melodic cues that are anything but negligible; if the references are inevitably the usual Neurosis and Cult Of Luna, it is also true that Dementia Senex possess a death soul definitely more developed than other bands in the field, approaching, at least in this aspect, what has been done recently in an optimal way by the Swiss When Icarus Falls. Therefore, the impact of two tracks such as Unscented Walls and Heartworm leaves no doubt about the remarkable technique exhibited by the quintet, capable of contrasting the more aggressive passages with moments of great emotional charge, in which a brilliant lead guitar stands out, accompanied by Cristian’s intense vocal interpretation (reminiscent at certain junctures of Anathema’s first singer, Darren White). Having said even Kairos, a short track that slips away without leaving any particular feeling, one can only appreciate this new taste of the potential of Dementia Senex, waiting for a forthcoming full length that, given the premises, could turn out to be a pleasant surprise.
