Here we are with a little gem of dark and atmospheric music coming from the always fertile Finland. Serotonin Syndrome is a band that can be catalogued with a certain approximation, since the post-metal component is quite consistent within a sound that belongs to the melodic death doom well rooted in the Nordic country. In fact, if we make an exception for the opening track Twelve Step Circle that, in several parts, pays duty to melodic death doom proving to be as pleasant as in the norm, the other four long tracks show a more restless trend, always poised between placid arpeggios of post-metal matrix and lashings often dramatically. In particular, the three central tracks are united by a constant crescendo, especially in the final part of Rusted Rainbow In The Horizon, magnificent in its evocation of pathos in profusion. Splendid also the final Sarajas, an instrumental that widely demonstrates the talent and the compositional sensibility of the guys from Rovaniemi. If we think of Swallow The Sun or even better, perhaps, of Kaunis Kuolematon, definitely more oriented towards liquid and reflective sounds, we can more or less imagine the sound proposed by Serotonin Syndrome, but in reality the goodness of the work lies in its being remembered for the personality in a field where records, however very beautiful, contain elements of novelty in homeopathic quantities. Really a nice discovery, and at this point it will also be the case to rediscover the debut full length released in 2014.
