Here comes from Belgium an attempt to approach post metal in a slightly different way than usual. Charnia present this second work of theirs entitled Het Laatste Licht, which contains only one long track of almost forty minutes with the same title; if all this can put some less patient listeners on edge, it must be said that, instead, the work of the Flemish band is not characterized by a monolithic trend although, as is natural, the song develops with a rather slow progression. If we want, Het Laatste Licht is structured like a classical composition, in which we find several movements: the comparison is not so out of place when you can see that, actually, for about the first half the main thread is a soft progression dominated by the violin of the guest Jens Debacker, assisted by the other external support constituted by the double bass played by Innerwoud. It ‘s almost impossible not to love a musical expression so intense and exemplary in its building an emotional crescendo that makes sometimes spasmodic waiting for that explosion that, even without knowing in advance, sooner or later will materialize in the headphones: but even this happens respecting the times, with a progression that brings first the entry of percussion and finally, at the twenty-fifth minute, that of the voice and the remaining electrical instrumentation, and then fade back into a liquid and calm post-metal, only soiled by the harsh vocal incursions. Het Laatste Licht is a work definitely anomalous for how it is built, but certainly fascinating and undoubtedly thick quality, showing a face of the genre less virulent and more emotional.
