After the good first step on the long distance, Maestus come back with Deliquesce; the Portland band, having lost the keyboardist Sofos and acquired the services of the guitarist Nathanael Kelly and the keyboardist Sarah Belieau, seems to move in a more precise direction without giving up the usual variations on the theme. The funeral death doom component thus takes the upper hand over the black one, even if some acceleration persists in a contest of great darkness and well-defined melodic fabric, although not exhibited in an overly explicit way, all exemplified best by the magnificent title track. A consistent progress for a reality that probably still has to give the best of itself, at least according to its theoretical potential.
