With such a moniker it would be reasonable to expect a sound close to the most uncompromising death metal, but this is not the case, as already suggested by a rather evocative cover: of course, the death doom staged by Rotting Kingdom is anything but airy and atmospheric, but it is also not devoid of a melodic idea that makes these forty minutes of A Deeper Shade of Sorrow an absolutely enjoyable test with pressing rhythms. The Kentucky band doesn’t betray the background of 3/5 of the line-up coming from the thrashers Tombstalker, but the difference compared to other similar releases is the conviction and the sense of measure of Rotting Kingdom in inserting some caresses inside a rough but groovy whole.
