Second full length for Finnish band Convocation, whose title is Ashes Coalesce, released last July under the aegis of Everlasting Spew Records. If the first album Scars Across already gave the impression of being in the presence of a high-level band, this latest one confirms and further increases the positive opinion towards the duo formed by Lauri Laaksonen, who takes care of all the instruments and songwriting, and Marko Neuman, voice and lyrics known for his membership in the remarkable Dark Buddha Rising. The main thing to know about Convocation is that they seem to be the most credible heirs of Colosseum, one of the most important bands in the Finnish funeral scene, who in a short period of time gave us three masterpieces before leader and composer Juhani Paalomaki decided to put an end to his inextricable inner turmoil. Convocation shares with Colosseum the same ability to reproduce the sense of anguish and melancholy that is inherent in those who compose music of this kind, without neglecting a melodic approach that always harbours a rather bitter aftertaste. The fact that the debut was given continuity after a relatively short period of time speaks in favour of the stability of the project, which makes Convocation a reality with a real possibility to propose works of great quality in the future.
