Interesting debut step for Covenan, the solo project of Mexican musician Iván Lira. The full length released last month, titled Another World… Another Time…, although apparently reaches the duration of an hour and a quarter is actually to be taken into account only for its first half, as the first five songs are then proposed in an instrumental version only; beyond this obvious redundancy, the work deserves to be brought to attention because the melodic death doom contained therein is of good workmanship. Actually, more death than doom, if you look closely, since the rhythms, even if not very sustained, are mostly consistent and there are few pronounced slowdowns; broadly speaking, Lira’s approach is not dissimilar to that of Sebastien Pierre with Cold Insight, so we’re talking about an interpretation of the subgenre of a certain thickness and certainly susceptible to future developments, given that the foundations laid appear already quite substantial. An incisive track like Black Sun Communion, which is also the first single released under the name Covenan last March, is enough to give an idea of the potential of this project.
