Lähdön Aika are a Finnish band that have been active since the first decade of the century, when they released their debut full length Tuomituu, followed by a long-distance follow-up only in 2015 with II and then by their third effort Alku in 2019; the return of the group, after several changes behind the microphone, comes with the ep Valonaara, released by Trepanation Recordings at the end of 2021. Lähdön Aika‘s post metal sludge grabs the throat and won’t let go, also thanks to the remarkable performance of new singer Eeli Helin, who roars through these four tracks for twenty minutes of music like there’s no tomorrow. There’s not too much room for melodies and interlocutory moments in the compositions of the Finnish combo, thanks to a sound that shakes and corrodes without resorting to excessive loads of sonic violence; that contained in Valonaara is the most canonical semblance that sludge exhibits when it contaminates itself especially with post-hardcore, allowing it to take on desperate and angry tones. Given that, in their mother tongue, Lähdön Aika means departure time, this new ep is a further stop on a journey of which we only know the starting details, while each stage represents the landing in an unknown and probably hostile place, where you can stay just long enough to catch your breath before leaving again towards an unknown destination.
