I loved Dreariness since their first steps, corresponding to a magnificent album as My Mind is too Weak to Forget (2013), followed by the equally essential Fragments (2016) and the ep Closer (2020), ideal complement to soothe the wait for the new full length Before We Vanish; in recent years, the proposal of the Roman band has not lost an ounce in intensity but has gradually moved from an atmospheric dsbm matrix up to the current blackgaze, a definition that then means everything and nothing but that, in short, serves to understand that the sound offered combines the harshness (especially vocal) of black metal to the soft and melancholic atmosphere of shoegaze. Dreariness, in this specific moment, represent the state of the art in this kind of sounds, being unique their ability to evoke seamlessly atmospheres full of anguish or buried under a heavy hood of melancholy; even in Before We Vanish impressive songs of rare emotive strength follow each other as always led by the voice of Tenebra, which exhibits scream and clean vocals supporting the alternation between positive and negative moods arising from a concept focused on the effects of “toxic relationships”, symbolized by the hedgehog’s dilemma. Before We Vanish is an album deep musically and lyrically, stylistically peculiar and with an enormous level of involvement: I think all these reasons are enough to make it your own without delay.
