There have already been many pleasant surprises in this first half of the year, in the form of bands that on their first record were able to offer mature work of great depth. These include Midnight Burial, a band from Texas that with Conjuring Darkness gives an impeccable interpretation of atmospheric doom closely connected to post metal and sludge elements. After an already convincing opener such as Engulfed in Terror, it is in the following track Beneath the Ashes that the Houston band explicitly reveals its talent, managing to weave splendid melodies overlaid by Mario Gonzales’ unvarying but merciless vocal style. It is a guitar work always in the foreground that makes this first full length of Midnight Burial a work to be eviscerated in every part, passing through other remarkable songs such as the alienating Oceans of Silence to arrive at the more sedate but no less intense concluding track Within Shallow Graves. Conjuring Darkness is a work that truly deserves the utmost attention.
