The German band Moribund Mantras have already been around for about ten years and have two previous full lengths to their credit, followed by this new …of Fathomless Depths, which, although it is classified as a long-distance work, lasts less than half an hour, being composed of three main tracks plus two short instrumentals. Apart from this, it is worth noting how the Stuttgart-based band interprets post-metal material in a heartfelt and intense manner, to which a heavy doom component is interwoven; moreover, in one track there also appears a rather peculiar clean vocal, the performance of which brings back nuances close to post-punk. I confess that I have not followed this band in the past, but I have to say that this new album is very convincing and I believe that Moribund Mantras, despite not being too well publicised, are a remarkable expression that deserves the right follow up, as they are capable of expressing with all possible conviction and commitment the sense of emptiness and dismay that often accompanies post-metal in its most extreme expressions.
